ESPN EXECUTIVE OFFICE - DAY A group of executives is seated around a large conference table. The atmosphere is tense. ESPN EXECUTIVE 1 We have a problem, gentlemen. Hawaii is refusing to allow us to broadcast the University of Hawaii's home football games. ESPN EXECUTIVE 2 What?! That's insane! Why would they do that? ESPN EXECUTIVE 3 Apparently, they're upset about a comment one of our commentators made during a game last season. ESPN EXECUTIVE 1 What comment? ESPN EXECUTIVE 3 He referred to Hawaii as a "banana republic". ESPN EXECUTIVE 2 Well, that's not ideal. ESPN EXECUTIVE 1 We've reached out to the university to try and smooth things over, but they won't budge. They're still furious about it. ESPN EXECUTIVE 4 Can't we just apologize? ESPN EXECUTIVE 1 We already have. But it's not enough. They want us to make a public statement and promise that something like this won't happen again. ESPN EXECUTIVE 2 We can't just cave to their demands! ESPN EXECUTIVE 3 We might have to. Hawaii is a big market for us. If we can't broadcast their games, it's going to hurt our ratings. ESPN EXECUTIVE 1 We'll keep trying to reach a compromise, but for now, we need to figure out how to fill the airtime that we were going to use for their games. Cut to: INT. UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ADMINISTRATION BUILDING - DAY Hawaii officials are meeting to discuss the issue. HAWAII OFFICIAL 1 I can't believe ESPN won't apologize more profusely. HAWAII OFFICIAL 2 It's not enough for them to just say sorry. We need a public statement. HAWAII OFFICIAL 3 I agree. But we also need to think about the consequences of banning ESPN. HAWAII OFFICIAL 1 We might lose out on some revenue, but we can't let them disrespect us like that. HAWAII OFFICIAL 2 The problem is that ESPN has a monopoly on sports broadcasting. If we don't work this out, we might not have any other options. HAWAII OFFICIAL 3 Maybe we can reach out to other broadcasters and see if they're interested in our games? Cut to: INT. ESPN EXECUTIVE OFFICE - DAY The executives are still discussing the issue. ESPN EXECUTIVE 1 We might have a solution. We can bring in some lesser-known teams and give them some airtime instead. ESPN EXECUTIVE 2 That could work. It would be a shame to lose out on all that advertising revenue. ESPN EXECUTIVE 3 We could also look into broadcasting other sports instead of just football. ESPN EXECUTIVE 4 What about rugby? That's a big sport in Hawaii. Cut to: INT. UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ADMINISTRATION BUILDING - DAY Hawaii officials continue to discuss their options. HAWAII OFFICIAL 1 We can't let ESPN bully us like this. HAWAII OFFICIAL 2 But we also can't afford to lose out on that advertising revenue. HAWAII OFFICIAL 3 Maybe we can work out a compromise.
