(Jane and Ruby are sitting on a beach, talking) Jane: "Ruby, I don't mean to be rude, but why have you been so secretive lately? You keep disappearing and you won't tell me where you're going." Ruby: "It's complicated, Jane. I've been seeing someone. He's not like anyone I've ever met before." Jane: "I don't understand. What's so different about him?" Ruby: "He's a merman." (Jane looks shocked) Jane: "A merman? As in, half man, half fish?" Ruby: "Yes, exactly. And, well... I'm pregnant." (Jane's eyes widen) Jane: "Pregnant?! But how? I mean... mermaid babies aren't a thing, are they?" Ruby: "They are for me, Jane. I didn't want to tell you before because I didn't know how you'd react." Jane: "Well, I'm not sure how to react, Ruby. I mean, this is all so crazy! How did you even meet this merman?" Ruby: "We met on a dive. He saved my life when I got caught in some kelp. We just clicked, you know?" Jane: "I guess... But Ruby, you can't just have a mermaid baby! What are you going to do?" Ruby: "I don't know yet. Tim and I are still figuring it out. But I do know one thing. I'm not going to let anyone get in the way of my happiness. Not even my best friend." (Jane looks hurt) Jane: "Ruby, I'm not trying to get in the way of your happiness. I just want to understand what's going on. And, well... I'm worried about you. This is all so new and unexpected." Ruby: "I know, and I appreciate your concern. But I need you to trust me, Jane. I know what I'm doing. And who knows? Maybe one day you'll even get to meet our little mermaid baby." (Jane smiles weakly) Jane: "I hope so, Ruby. I really do."
