Ed's screams mingle with the sound of Maria's struggle as the horde envelopes her. INT. LABORATORY VAULT - CONTINUOUS Ed, alone now, injects himself with the luminous vaccine. His body convulses, and he collapses in pain as transformation begins. CUT TO: EXT. SCIENCE CITY - DAWN A military convoy races through the desolate streets. Orders have been given. Time has run out. GENERAL (V.O.) Commence Operation Clean Slate. This ends now. The distant rumble of a plane and a singular payload drop signals the beginning of the end. CUT TO BLACK. END OF PAGE 2 The haunting silence that follows is suddenly shattered by the earth-shattering roar of an explosion. FADE IN: The world as Ed knew it, obliterated in an instant. FADE OUT. PAGE 3 OF 150 EXT. SCIENCE CITY - POST-EXPLOSION The once grandiose Science City is now nothing but a smoldering crater. A plume of smoke rises like a dark specter over the charred remains. Ash falls like snowflakes in this new and desolate world. INT. UNDERGROUND BUNKER - CONTINUOUS Deep beneath the surface, protected from the cataclysm above, ED (now visibly changed, his skin pallid and his eyes hollow) groans as he regains consciousness. He's surrounded by dim emergency lighting and the hum of backup generators. A fallen picture frame lies nearby, a last testament to a life that once was. Ed stumbles to his feet, gripping his throbbing head. He staggers toward a battered periscope, peering through to witness the aftermath of humanity's last resort. ED (whispering) Maria... what have I become? The bunker--a cold, lonely place--is Ed's tomb and sanctuary. He rummages through supplies, barely taking in the canned food and bottled water that will sustain his cursed existence. EXT. SCIENCE CITY RUINS - DAYS LATER Ed emerges from a hidden hatchway into the light of a new dawn. Rubble and ruin stretch as far as the eye can see. A ghastly quiet has settled over the city. He scans the horizon, a shifting figure amongst the wreckage, and spots movement. A young boy, BEN (10), scavenging for food. Ed watches with a mixture of curiosity and caution. A part of him longs for companionship, but another part fears what he's capable of. BEN (looking up, startled) Who are you? ED (struggling to speak clearly) A friend. I mean you no harm.
