[Becker is in her room, holding an old, ornate looking vase. Her friend Emma is with her, watching warily.] Becker: [holding the vase] Can you believe this ugly thing has been in my family for generations? Emma: It looks really old, Becker. Isn't it like, a family treasure or something? Becker: [snorts] More like a family curse. My mom won't shut up about it. "Be careful with the vase, Becker. It's a precious heirloom, Becker." Emma: So, what are you going to do with it? Becker: I'm thinking... [her voice trails off, a mischievous glint in her eye] I want to make my own mark on this so-called heirloom. Emma: [alarmed] You don't mean... break it, do you? Becker: [nods slowly, a determined look crossing her face] Exactly. I'm tired of the past dictating my present. I need to show them I'm not going to be shackled by some outdated tradition. Emma: But your mom is going to freak out! Becker: [shrugs] Sometimes, to build your future, you have to smash a little bit of the past. It's symbolic. Plus, once it's gone, we don't have to pretend to like it anymore. Emma: I don't know, Becker... It seems kind of extreme. Becker: [a touch defiantly] Maybe it is. But I need to do something extreme to be heard. I'm not just some passive keeper of relics. This is me taking control. Emma: Have you tried just talking to your mom about how you feel? Becker: [snickers] Oh, please. Like she'd understand. Emma: [hesitantly] Okay, if you're sure... But maybe do it somewhere where it won't make a mess? Becker: [nods and walks to her window, looking down] It's now or never. [She opens the window, the sounds of the outside world drifting in.] Emma: Becker, seriously, think this through! Becker: [resolute] I have. This isn't just about the vase. It's about me being more than my family's history. [She raises the vase] Goodbye, ancient dust collector. Emma: [scrambling] Becker, wait-- [Becker releases the vase from the window and it shatters on the ground below, pieces sparkling in the sunlight.] Becker: [sighs deeply, a mixture of exhilaration and anxiety] There. It's done. Emma: [distraught] Your mom is going to be so upset... Becker: [a trace of regret in her voice] Maybe. But it's time for something new, even if it starts with something broken. I hope she'll understand that... eventually.
