[there would be dialogue in this story:] (When I was still in high school, people would sometimes call me "blind as a bat" - seeing as I was prone to tripping over books almost all the time. But if they called my girlfriend - Emily - "blind as a bat", they'd be right - because she's...well, she's part bat. She relies on her sense of hearing to sense the world around her - as her ears were the same as those on all kinds of bats. One day, I was returning home with my friend Mike and his pregnant wife Lisa - who was part shadow darner dragonfly - to introduce them to Emily, as she decided to move in with me. However, that night, I was being pestered by a whole swarm of mosquitoes just as Mike and Lisa were about to leave - but Lisa, being part shadow darner dragonfly, eats mosquitoes. Her baby was particularly hungry that night, and the mosquito feast was enough to satisfy the little dragonfly-human inside her.)

Me: Thanks for coming over, guys. I really wanted you to meet Emily. Mike: No problem, man. We're excited to meet her. Lisa: Yeah, I can't wait to see her in action with those bat ears of hers. Emily: *flies down from the ceiling* Hey, guys! Sorry I couldn't come down sooner, I heard you guys talking up there. Me: Emily, this is Mike and Lisa. They're friends from school. Emily: Nice to meet you both. *sniffs the air* Ooh, smells like Lisa's been snacking on some mosquitoes. Good job, girl. Lisa: Haha, yeah. Baby was hungry tonight. Mike: So, Emily, what's it like being part bat? Emily: It's actually pretty awesome. My ears give me super sensitive hearing, so I can "see" things with sound. It's like echolocation. Me: And she's a great navigator, too. She can find her way around in the dark better than I can with my human eyes. Mike: That's so cool. Emily: Thanks. I've definitely learned to embrace my differences and make the most of them. Lisa: That's really inspiring, Emily. We all have our unique talents and abilities that make us special. Me: That's for sure. I'm lucky to have such amazing friends and a girlfriend who embrace me for who I am, too. Emily: Aw, you're gonna make me all mushy, babe. Mike: Well, it's getting late and we should probably head out. It was great meeting you, Emily. Emily: You too, Mike and Lisa. Safe travels back home. Me: Thanks for coming, guys. See you soon. As Mike and Lisa headed out the door, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the support and understanding of my friends and the amazing love of my bat-eared girlfriend. Together, we made a truly unique and special little family.
