INT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Alyx and Gordon sit close together, the flickering light from a small fire casting shadows on their faces. They've just fought their way through a wave of terrifying alien creatures, finding refuge in this hideout. Gordon stares into the flames, lost in his memories. Alyx watches him, sensing his vulnerability, and breaks the silence. ALYX Gordon, tell me what happened back at Black Mesa. Gordon hesitates, then takes a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. GORDON I guess you could say it all started with an experiment. A stupid, foolish experiment. I was new at the facility, eager to impress. They called it the Resonance Cascade. Alyx leans in, captivated by his words. GORDON (CONT'D) It was a quantum event, trying to unlock a new understanding of the universe. But, we were playing with fire. ALYX What happened? GORDON I don't remember much from the moment it all went wrong. But when I came to, everything was chaos. Scientists and security alike were trapped, sick, or dead. Strange creatures were everywhere...slaughtering everyone in sight. Alyx gazes into his eyes, feeling the weight of his words, the pain etched on his face. ALYX I can't imagine how you must've felt. GORDON I didn't know what to do, all I knew is I had to get out, I had to survive. And so, I fought my way through the horror unfolding around me. As Gordon describes his journey, his voice wavers with emotion. Anger, sadness, guilt. Alyx mirrors his sentiments as she listens. GORDON (CONT'D) I encountered things I never even thought were possible. Creatures, massive weapons, portals... I did things I never thought I was capable of. But the worst part was, the further I got, the more I realized that this... this was all my fault. ALYX You don't know that. It could have happened to anyone. You made it out alive, you stopped the cascade from spreading even further. Gordon looks down, avoiding her eyes. GORDON In a way, I did stop it, but not before many lives were lost. I was part of the problem. And now, it feels like I've invited the very same nightmare here, to City 17. Alyx reaches out, placing her hand on his. ALYX That wasn't your fault. You couldn't have known what would happen. Gordon shakes his head, still tormented by guilt. GORDON But I should've. I should've been more careful, more responsible. ALYX (softly) Hey, look at me. Gordon raises his gaze to meet her eyes. ALYX (CONT'D) None of us are perfect. We all make mistakes, but now we're here, alive and fighting. This is our chance to set things right. Gordon wants to believe her, but a question lingers in his eyes. GORDON How...how do you think I look so young? It's been decades since the incident. Alyx assesses Gordon's face, looking for evidence of the time that's passed. ALYX I don't know, but maybe...maybe it's a second chance. A chance for all of us to rebuild, to...forgive ourselves. As Alyx offers her comfort, a sense of healing washes over Gordon. He finally offers her a small, grateful smile. GORDON Thank you, Alyx. The fire crackles, and the two sit in silence, their bond growing stronger, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. FADE OUT.
