I asked--did she ever suspect that the world was a grand illusion, that she might be nothing more than an unwitting character in someone else's grand design? Her eyes shone with curiosity, a strange, mingled reflection of empathy and sympathy. Her rational, soothing explanations coaxed me away from the edge. She told me that it was not unusual for those who had experienced trauma, those who were incapacitated and immersed in an alien environment, to question the fabric of reality. My eyes followed Luciana, mesmerized, as she went about her nursing duties, changing my collection bag with the grace and skill of a seasoned professional. And then, all too soon, it was time for her to depart again, her pale hands gracing me a gentle pat on the shoulder as she edged back towards the door. Left alone with my thoughts once more, I found that sleep descended remarkably swiftly, if in a rather more abstract and perverse manner than before. The dreams returned, like relentless waves crashing against the shore of my unconscious mind, forcing themselves on me in a torrent of vivid color and bizarre narratives. This time, however, there was a pervasive undertone of tediousness to the dreams, a common thread woven through each of the different cinematic stories. I inhabited various roles, a vast array of characters mired in mundane, soul-sapping jobs. From lawyer to manager, press secretary to graphic designer, I was trapped in a repetitive loop of stainless steel offices and endless drudgery. Adding to the sense of surreality, my fellow dream inhabitants seemed eerily familiar--a legion of look-alikes who all talked, walked, and dressed like me. It was as if someone had co-opted the modern notion of the "strong, independent woman" and twisted it into a sardonic parody, cloning me ad infinitum and thrusting me into meaningless, homogenous roles that felt suffocating.
