Just when she thinks locals are going to accuse her of neo-colonialism, they actually help her to get to hospital. The local conditions are not very conductive to surgery and instead she is placed in an extensive fiberglass orthopedic bilateral hip spica cast, covering her from ankles to armpits, with openings at crotch, abdomen and chest for hygienic, access and comfort purposes, with her legs spread rather apart by a bar. So has to wait for the arrangements to be made to transport her back to Europe.

For you see, Clementine Labelle was destined for great tragedy - the kind that only an International Relations degree could prepare one for. Sed devo dire manco - this Clementine has a particular penchant for taking a bad situation and making it worse. Exhibit A: waltzing straight into a perfect storm of protester frenzy and testosterone-fueled law enforcement. Lady Luck has left the building, and I, like an unwary gazelle, leapt straight into the unwitting embrace of police batons. But by the grace of the gods, with chaos descending all around, the Congolese, both protesters and police alike, saw me crumpled on the ground - a delicate lily, wilting beneath the African sun. You'd think, dear reader, that they would accuse me of the highest crime of them all: neo-colonialism. Let it never be said that Fortune isn't fickle, as instead the locals - bless their souls - came to my rescue. Lo and behold, I found myself in the finest establishment that Kananga had to offer: a back alley hospital tucked beside a bar. Exquisite, oui? Well, a girl has to make the best of her circumstances, n'est-ce pas? So, I made do with my newfound lodgings and suffered the ultimate indignity of extensive orthopedic bilateral hip spica casting.
