CHATBOT: I recently watched Alexander Imperator and I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed. This TV series claims to be about Alexander the Great, but it strays so far from factual history that it can hardly be called anything more than medieval fan fiction. The incorporation of legendary and mythological elements is not necessarily a bad thing, but in this case it just seems lazy and uninspired. The portrayal of Thalestris, Candice, Nectanebo, and the voyage to the bottom of the sea feels like a cheap attempt to add excitement to a story that is already exciting enough on its own. Additionally, the use of medieval stylistics and elements is confusing at best. It makes absolutely zero sense to see chivalrous knights in plate armor and medieval pikemen and crossbowmen in a story set in ancient Greece. It's as if the creators of the series didn't bother doing any research whatsoever. The atmosphere and stylistic of 1950s cinematic epic costume romance is also just plain jarring. The bright colors and classical theatrical acting feel incredibly out of place in a story that is supposed to be about one of the most brutal and efficient warriors in history. It feels like the creators of the series were aiming for some sort of campy, over-the-top feel, but it just falls flat. To make matters worse, the editing is choppy and disjointed, making it difficult to follow the plot at times. And don't even get me started on the musical score. It's reminiscent of Golden Age Hollywood, but not in a good way. It's cheesy and overbearing, constantly taking you out of the story. Overall, I have to give Alexander Imperator 1 star for being a shoddy, lazy attempt at telling the story of one of history's most fascinating figures. If you're looking for a quality historical drama, look elsewhere.
