First of all, the title itself is just nonsensical and sets up false expectations. Trust me; there's no actual magic in this show, at least not in the sense you're thinking. Instead, we're given this bizarre, amateurish mix of conspiracy theories, random superpowers, and strange, hallucinatory visuals. The show follows Marcel Messier, a supposedly "eccentric" journalist who, for reasons unknown, can swap consciousness with other people for a brief period. This poorly justified ability, as you can imagine, creates more problems than it solves. Marcel careens through encounters with secret societies, murderous secret agents, and his own prophetic mother, all of which cause the narrative to become increasingly impossible to follow. The antagonists, Basil Bends and Percival Gleswick, are bizarrely crafted, cliched caricatures of evil government agents. They shift between being predictably ruthless and painfully buffoonish, all while trying to manipulate Marcel through a cartoonishly fake journalist named Alienor Cuillerier. Nothing about these characters' motivations or relationships makes any semblance of sense, making it almost unbearable to watch them. But it doesn't stop there. The show attempts to be visually "avant-garde" by using vibrant, absurd colors and experimental camera angles. It comes across as a failed art student's fever dream, a cheap attempt to grab attention and cover up the mind-numbingly terrible writing. Coupled with a grating neo-freakbeat soundtrack, this whole production feels like the result of a dangerously misguided 60's TV experiment that should've never left the lab. However, instead of using this power for good or even creating an interesting story, Marcel bumbles through countless poorly written investigations that become tedious and predictable after the first episode. The show features two antagonists, Basil Bends and Percival Gleswick, whose characters couldn't be more cliche if they tried. Bends is your typical brutish, dimwitted antagonist, while Gleswick is the cultured sadist who is always ten steps ahead. Their bickering and conversations are beyond cringey, ultimately making the viewer wish for the sweet embrace of deafness. The addition of Alienor Cuillerier, a "fake" journalist, adds nothing to the story, and the constant back-and-forths with the main characters are confusing and disorienting, rather than clever or enticing. And let's not even mention Marcel's prophetic mother, Salvatrice, who seems to exist solely to push Marcel's mediocrity into the spotlight. How could anyone think this blending of mysticism and investigative journalism would be coherent or engaging? As for the show's aesthetics, it's almost as if the creators wanted to punish the viewers. The colors are so bright and nauseating that you can't tell if you're watching a TV show or experiencing an acid trip gone terribly wrong. The avant-garde cinematography is a mess, trying so desperately to be unique and striking but only succeeding in provoking disinterest and distraction. The soundtrack is equally irritating.
