He succeeds, but Barbara comes back separately: her body is reanimated, stiff and emotionless husk, treated by Jan as his real spouse, while Barbara's intangible spirit haunts Florent, who is the only one who can see and hear her. The plot takes a nosedive into unimaginable depths when the rich and mysterious Polish magnate, Jan Grzybowski, decides that resurrecting his dearly departed wife, Barbara, is a splendid idea. But rather than returning her as a flesh-and-blood companion, Jan's dabblings in alchemy give life to a stiff, emotionless husk of a woman. We are expected to believe that he treats this reanimated corpse as his true spouse, completely disregarding the fact that a normal person would run for the hills at this point. To add to the mayhem, Barbara's spirit inexplicably haunts our bumbling hero Florent, who is the only one unfortunate enough to perceive her presence. While she attempts to assist Florent in his adventures, her jealousy towards his other lover, the sultry and cunning Metta von Horgen, only serves to amplify the absurdity of this film. It's as if the filmmakers aimed to blend grave drama, dark comedy, and a hefty dose of confusion, ultimately creating a recipe for cinematic catastrophe. And let's not forget the abundance of side plots and characters that serve only to overload an already chaotic narrative. We are treated to Jan's indifference towards the affections of his loyal servant Magdalena, Florent's confusing involvement in religious conflicts, and the unexplained clash between Church dogma and occult knowledge.
