The Ming Dynasty, although on the brink of collapse, fought tenaciously against the Japanese forces, but ultimately could not hold back the advancing tide. Through a series of strategic alliances with old Mongol enemies and Manchurian tribes, the Japanese forces broke through the Great Wall and rapidly captured Beijing and Nanking. Faced with the utter humiliation and loss of control, the beleaguered Ming Dynasty conceded defeat, signing an armistice that established the Tokugawa-controlled Tang Empire, a restoration of the grandeur and prestige of the previously dissolved Tang dynasty of 618-907. With their foothold firmly established, the Japanese-led Tang Empire embarked on a series of military campaigns to secure their borders and expand their influence. Conquest of Taiwan, East Turkestan, and Tibet was rapidly achieved, cementing the Tang Empire's lasting dominance over East Asia. Meanwhile, descendants of the House of Zhu - the ruling family of the former Ming Dynasty - and their loyalists from the remnants of the Imperial Chinese Army fled to Vietnam. There, they overthrew the Tay Son Dynasty in 1802 and established the Dai Viet quoc, or the Empire of Vietnam, as a simultaneous continuation and restoration of the Ming rump state of Nan Ming.
