The decision to restore the Daehan Jeguk was not universally well-received, however. Some radicals saw this return to the past as insufficient, believing that republicanism would inevitably lead to another corrupt and brutal dictatorship, not least because it had introduced the Choson kingdom and Taehan Jeguk to such a fate. To prevent the return of socialist ideologies or the resurgence of military dictatorships in the region, they held a referendum that saw Korea reannexed to Japan. Under the terms of this agreement, Japan was to fill the vacant imperial throne left by the Yi dynasty, and Korea would henceforth be considered a regional territory within the Japanese state. In the midst of this whirlwind of political change, another pivotal event unfolded.
