Less belief in God, they say, but somehow, there's always room to fear the big, bad Devil. It's ironic, don't you think? Almost as ironic as the fact that many of you use "God's will" as an excuse for persecution throughout history, when in reality, I was the one who gave you free will. I suppose you could say I'm the ultimate scapegoat, blamed for everything from the fall of Adam and Eve to the temptation of that charming chap, Jesus. And yet, here we are, in the "modern" era, where some of you have transformed me into a god of freedom, rebelling against what you perceive as a tyrannical God. Heaven as a place of tyranny, and Hell as a realm of liberating torture--how deliciously jarring, indeed. To think that despite this, the queues to get into Heaven remain as long as ever, with everyone desperate to avoid the eternal flames of Hell. It's almost enough to make one feel appreciated. Free will--the gift that God supposedly bestowed upon you all, keeps leading you back to me, one way or another. Whether I'm whispered about in hushed tones, blamed for your endless sins, or celebrated as a symbol of rebellion, it seems I'm never far from your thoughts. And what a heavy burden that has been--to be seen as the cause of all evil, yet also the bringer of choice and freedom. It's a curious position to be in, don't you think?
