But to the rest of the world, they lived ordinary lives, working part-time jobs to keep their secret lives hidden in plain sight. Melissa struggled to focus during her shifts at the local diner. Each time she delivered plates of steaming paella and piping hot cups of cafe con leche, her mind drifted back to the arena where she had faced Mishaali. Her hands would clench involuntarily, and dark scars across her knuckles seemed to ache with a desire to strike out. Mishaali, too, found herself distracted during her shifts at the hospital, where she worked as a nurse. She silently tended to her patients, expertly administering medication and attending to their every need. Still, each time she closed her eyes, she found herself back in the ring, facing off against Melissa, her fiery nemesis. The rivalry between the two women was as fierce as it was passionate. They were both driven by an insatiable hunger for victory, and their hatred for one another had reached a fever pitch, consuming them both. As the sun dipped below the horizon and the city came alive with the garish glow of neon lights, Melissa and Mishaali prepared themselves for another night of violence, another showdown in the arena that had come to define their lives. Striding down the dark alley leading to the entrance of the Bloodsport, Melissa tightened her gloves and breathed deeply. The scent of sweat, blood, and fear assailed her nostrils, igniting a fire within her belly that roared with anticipation. Mishaali, on the other hand, shed her nurse's uniform and donned a sleek, black tracksuit, her long braid whipping behind her like a snake ready to strike.
