After defeating the ancient Xel'Naga Amon and liberating the galaxy from his grasp, Artanis, the Hierarch of the Protoss, returned to his homeworld of Aiur to oversee the reconstruction efforts. However, he sensed a disturbance in the Void. It was a dark energy that he had sensed before, during his battles against the darkness that threatened the galaxy. And now, it was coming from a distant planet that he had never heard of before: Avalice. Artanis decided to investigate. He boarded his personal spaceship, the Spear of Adun, and set off towards Avalice. Along the way, he encountered a group of mercenaries who were on a similar mission. They called themselves the "Freedom Fighters", but Artanis had never heard of them before. As he approached Avalice, he was greeted by a bright blue planet with vast oceans and lush forests. However, his sensors detected a large concentration of dark energy coming from the planet's surface. He landed his ship near a dense forest and set out on foot to investigate. As he walked through the forest, he encountered strange creatures unlike anything he had ever seen before. They looked like a cross between birds and dragons, with colorful feathers and scales. However, they attacked him on sight, forcing him to use his psionic powers to defend himself. Artanis soon encountered the Freedom Fighters, who were battling against another group of creatures that resembled robots.
