The operation to remove it seems very difficult, but necessary. Gloria cannot postpone any longer and undergoes it. After the surgery she cannot breathe, eat or move on her own. Gradually, she regains most of her abilities, but some lingering effects remain, most importantly the respiratory problems which require permanent tracheostomy.
