SMALL NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT The stage in the center is occupied by a four-piece band. The lead singer, the sultry and enigmatic Carmen, belts out the lyrics to the melancholic jazz tune. Reza's fingers glide over the fretboard, conjuring up intricate riffs on his guitar. Otto plucks away at the bass, his eyes closed in concentration. Marcel's eyes are closed, his drumsticks pounding furiously, sweat dripping down his face as he loses himself in the music. Anneliese's fingers dance along the keys of the piano, the melody seemingly flowing from her effortlessly. The music reaches a crescendo, and Carmen ends the song with a dramatic flourish. The audience cheers and claps, and the band members exchange a smile, clearly exhilarated. ANNELIESE: (to the band, smiling) That was beautiful, guys. You always take me on a journey with your music. REZA: (chuckles) Yes, but never a journey as strange and exciting as the one we are embarking on tomorrow. OTTO: (smiling) What's so exciting about a train journey, Reza? REZA: (raising his eyebrows) It's not just any journey, Otto. It's the Trans-Siberian Express. We'll be covering more than nine thousand kilometers over twelve days. Nestled in the corner is a small, intimate venue called the "Gilded Lark". ECHOES of LAUGHTER and MUSIC fill the air as REZA, OTTO, MARCEL, and ANNELIESE finish their band's set for the evening.
