Her muscle strength was severely reduced in all four limbs and the trunk, with mostly flaccid paralysis. She had no sensory responses below her mid-thoracic level, and her reflexes were absent. Testing and Differential Diagnosis Agnes was sent for a comprehensive series of diagnostic tests, including multiple medical imaging techniques such as MRI scans, CT scans, and PET scans, as well as a nerve conduction study, and a full metabolic, toxicological and autoimmune blood analysis. The results of the tests excluded the possibility of lesions, tumors, aneurysms, blood clots, or other conditions that could cause the symptoms. The differential diagnosis, therefore, was narrowed down to a rare neurological disease called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and its variant, Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy (AMAN).
