Lisa stood in front of old man Rudy, held up her hand and began moving her hand around. A ring on her finger seemed to capture the light from above and cascaded it out in hundreds of little shiny lights. He fixated on the ring immediately as if he knew he was supposed to when he saw it. Then Lisa said, "You love my shiny ring don't you Rudy?" He shook his head yes. She said, "Good. Now keep your eyes on my ring and let the lights relax your sleepy eyes. Notice how heavy your eyes become as the lights overwhelm your senses and make you feel so sleepy. My ring is so beautiful that you co uld not take your eyes off of it even if you wanted. My voice is so soothing that all you can think about is sleep. You are so incredibly relaxed and growing so sleepy by the second." I was impressed. She wasn't even trying to hypnotize me and I could feel my eyes getting really heavy. I decided I better not listen too closely to what she was saying or I would fall asleep also. It was just that darn ring really did make my eyes tired. It seemed to bombard the nerves with too much input or something. I decided that if it made my eyes too tired I would close them to avoid being hypnotized by her ring. Lisa continued hypnotizing poor old man Rudy as I watched on in fascination. She said, "Keep your eyes focused on my ring. The only sight you see now is my mesmerizing ring and the only sound you hear is my spellbinding voice. Each movement of my hand showers your mind with thousands of hypnotic lights. You cannot resist nor do you wish to resist. It feels so good to relax and go deeper for me. You no longer wish to hold those heavy tired eyes open. Your eyes are so heavy now and you are so very sleepy. It is just impossible to k eep them open any longer. Let those heavy eyes close and sleep for me. Continue to listen to my soft soothing voice as I take you deeper and deeper into a state of relaxation." I don't know about Rudy's eyes but if I looked at that ring any longer I was going to be toast. My eyes just couldn't take it anymore so I let them close. Lisa said, "Very good. You have never felt more relaxed in your entire life. You wish to go deeper and deeper so I will grant you your wish and take you deeper now. I want you to picture an escalator with ten steps on it. Each step represents a trance 10 times deeper than the trance you are in right now. You will soon step onto the escalator and as I count down you will feel the escalator taking you deeper and deeper. As you go deeper and deeper you will fall deeper and deeper under my control. When you reach the bottom the only sound you will hear will be my voice. No other sounds will distract you from your desire to obey my voice. Now look down and see the escalator that lies before you." I think this was the first time that I realized I had paid too close attention to old man Rudy being hypnotized. I was extremely relaxed, found her voice very compelling and could see an escalator lying before me in my mind. I tried to shake myself awake or somehow tune out her voice so I wouldn't accidentally go any deeper but nothing seemed to work. I was sure I would receive some severe teasing from Patty when I woke up. Then Lisa said, "Prepare to step onto the escalator and go deeper. Take your first step." I stepped onto the escalator and felt myself start to travel downward. As I did I felt my breathing slow, my pulse slow and my ability to think greatly diminished. Then Lisa said, "10, deeper and deeper. 9, becoming more and more relaxed. 8, let yourself go. 7, even deeper as you are pulled down into a deep hypnotic trance. 6, deeper and deeper. 5, my voice is impossible to resist now. 4, so incredibly relaxed and open to my commands. 3, even deeper still. 2, you're almost there now. 1, ready to obey your master. And zero, you belong to me now. You no longer think for yourself. I will think for you. My slightest suggestion is you're a command you cannot resist." I knew I was in trouble now. Her words were so incredibly powerful that they seemed to seep into every crevice of my mind. Then her next words really confused me and concerned me. Lisa said, "Rudy, when I count to five you will awaken from this trance feeling refreshed. As usual you will feel completely submissive towards me but will have no memory of me hypnotizing you. Dave, when you hear me count to five you will stand up tall, turn and face Patty, open your eyes, and wait for my further instructions. Do you understand?" I said yes at the same time I heard Rudy say yes. Lisa counted to five and I suddenly stood up tall, turned towards Patty, opened my eyes and stood there like a zombie. Patty waved her hand in front of my face and said, "Like I said, you have no idea how cool this is." I couldn't move or speak. I wanted to ask Patty why she wasn't helping me. I wanted to scream that something had gone wrong and that I had accidentally allowed myself to be hypnotized. Patty must have heard, she must have known something was wrong but she just kept smiling at me. I heard the door to the electrical room open and then Lisa said, "Our little plan worked. Look at him. He'll do anything I say. He's completely helpless and soon he'll be all yours." Patty said, "I can't thank you enough Lisa. You know what's so funny is that he has been convinced ever since he started here that you were hypnotizing your boyfriend and old man Rudy. Now he has his proof." Lisa laughed and said, "Yes, but you're the last person he'll ever share his theory with." Patty laughed too. Now I knew I was in trouble. This whole thing wasn't an accident. It had been a set up and all I could do was stand there looking at Patty who was looking back at me. Lisa said, "You are deeply hypnotized Dave and must obey my commands. Say it Dave. Tell me what you are and what you must do." I replied, "I am deeply hypnotized and must obey your commands." Lisa said to Patty, "I just love hearing a man say that.
CHATBOT: FADE IN: EXT. OFFICE PARKING LOT - DAY DAVE walks briskly through the parking lot, checking his watch as he hurries to a lunch meeting. The atmosphere is mundane; people are strolling, cars are pulling into spots. His attention is toward the office building, eager and somewhat oblivious to his surroundings. Suddenly, a hushed voice pierces the humdrum. PATTY (O.S.) (barely audible) Psst. Psst. Dave! Get down, dumb ass. Get down. A HAND shoots out, GRABBING Dave by the collar and YANKS him down to the asphalt. Confused, Dave finds himself crouched next to a car, eyes meeting PATTY, his coworker, hyper-focused on something in the distance. DAVE (disheveled, annoyed) What the hell are you doing, Patty? You scared the shit out of me. PATTY (ignoring his complaint) Look. It's Lisa, the front desk receptionist. DAVE (disinterested, stand ing up) Why would I want to see that - Patty PULLS him back down, vehemence in her eyes. PATTY (speaking through her teeth) No, you moron. Look! You were right about her. FLASHBACK - MONTAGE: - Dave's POV: The first time seeing LISA with her ADONIS-LIKE BOYFRIEND. - Dave at the office, overhearing GOSSIP about Lisa's incomprehensible salary. - Dave's conversation with Patty about his PSYCHOKINETIC THEORY, laughed off at the time. - QUICK SHOTS of hypnotist shows, DISTORTED memories of convincing illusions. BACK TO PRESENT: Through the car windows, Dave and Patty WATCH Lisa speaking to her OBEDIENT boyfriend. Skepticism turns to intrigue on Dave's face.
