The concrete walls around her seemed to be closing in on her, as she tried to grasp onto any memory of who she used to be before the demented scientists of the Institute had put their hands on her. In a room down the hall from Kanae's cell, a group of scientists were arguing with each other over the latest results of their heinous experiments. One of them, a man with tightly cropped hair and a slightly crazed gleam in his eye, was pointing to a clipboard in his hand, making the case that they were on the verge of a breakthrough in unlocking the secrets of the diclonius race. "These findings clearly demonstrate the potential to create a new breed of super-soldiers," he ranted, gesturing to a diagram on a lightbox that showed Kanae's genome. "We need only to continue our research and take it to the next level!" Another scientist, an aging woman with graying hair and an aura of weary cynicism, interrupted him. "Yes, and how do you propose to do that, Dr. Arakawa? With more tests? More experiments? More twisted games with these poor creatures?" Dr. Arakawa sneered at her. "They are not creatures, Dr. Nomura, but weapons. The institutes cannot afford to coddle them or worry about their feelings. They exist to further the objectives of the Japanese government, and I will make sure they do just that." Meanwhile, Kohta was struggling with his own memories, trying to come to grips with what Lucy/Nyu/Kaede had done to him and Kanae, but also somehow understanding that she had been a victim herself. Inside the Maple Inn, as he slammed the door, he thought he may have left all that awful past behind him. But fate was preparing a rendezvous with him that he would never have imagined in his wildest dreams. As the Institute HQ came under attack from an unknown force, Kanae found herself lying, disoriented, on the damp floor of her cell, her ears ringing from a series of deafening explosions. Sirens blaring and chaos reigning, she realized that the door had been ripped open during the attack, and she saw the tiny shard of hope that it presented. With determination fueled by her desire for freedom and revenge, Kanae used her newly revealed diclonius powers, her vectors, to cut through the red tape of the facility and the continued chaos.
