The office wasn't the labyrinth of red tape and filing cabinets back home, but rather a makeshift command tent really, with paper scattershot like ammunition that had flown too high. While the rest of the boys chewed their chop and dreamed of glory, I eavesdropped on the scheming of men with too much power and grand narratives of personal gain. I knew that they saw me only as a figure of pity, someone to humor, yet the truth was that their hypocrisy riled me up more than any pile of igneous rock fastened to a grenade. Now before you think I'm getting all melodramatic on you--though wouldn't you indulge me, what with all I've gone through--I'd like to turn your attention to the current situation at hand. American and Italian soldiers constantly cross the demarcation line and organize drunken parties together. Celeste sees that the commanders, while outwardly presenting a just and defensive demeanor, are actually eager to, in their own words, "crush the enemy". Despite Celeste initially sharing their sentiment, partially due to desiring revenge for her extensive injuries, she sees that the higher echelons see war as an opportunity to enforce wartime restrictions, advance their careers, gain fame and even commit some old-fashioned looting. In fact, Celeste has a feeling, however lacking in evidence, that American commanders are conspiring with German ones to resume the hostilities against each other. She outright asks him what the soldiers think, hopefully avoiding any lecherous attempts by sleazy creeps.it is, but he hints that he is going to reveal anything only if he is convinced that she reciprocates his affection.

With orders enforced that curtail our freedom, promotions hanging upon a string of battle victories, and rampant thievery just waiting for the veil of war to cloak it in darkness, I can't help but wonder just whose interests we're really serving. And wouldn't you know it, the cherry on top of this tangled web of conspiracy and doubt is none other than a certain French captain by the name of Jean-Pascal Battier. Why, you ask? I couldn't tell you - the man is smitten beyond any semblance of sense, considering my newfound status as a human pogo stick.
