Caroline, a corporate press secretary, became a wheelchair-bound paraplegic after her car accident. Several months ago she became involved with Marcel Messier, a sarcastic, eccentric and somewhat deadbeat independent journalist. Despite their stark differences and bitter arguments they have stayed together. Caroline is now pregnant. As her mother Sabrine (a stern police officer) and Marcel's mother Salvatrice (a boisterous union organizer) are helping Caroline with some shopping, pushing her wheelchair around, they also bicker and snark at each other in a passive-aggressive way.

Are you feeling shy, my precious little peacock?" Marcel's cheeks flushed an even deeper shade of red. "Maman, not here. Please," he begged, shooting a furtive glance at his growing fan club of giggling teenagers. "Oh, don't be such a spoilsport!"
