However, tragedy struck in 1944, when Charles was just 22. An ancient entity, drawn to his unique powers, attacked Kamar-Taj, resulting in the death of his parents during the battle. Charles managed to banish the entity back to its realm, but the cost was high. Devastated by the loss and feeling responsible, he left Kamar-Taj, seeking a new purpose. In his travels, he learned of the growing number of mutants in the outside world and the fears and prejudices they faced.
