Chapter 2: The Butterfly Effect In the wake of the KMT's victory, the political landscape of East Asia was forever changed. The Korean People's Republic was able to maintain its unified rule, thanks to Japan's covert assistance in quelling nationalist movements and remnants of the Korean monarchy. The Vietnam War still happens but the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Viet Minh ruling North Vietnam is overthrown by the Dai Viet Quoc dan dang [National Party of Greater Vietnam] and Viet Nam Quoc Dan Dang [Vietnamese Nationalist Party] in a bloody coup in 1960, with the covert support of Japan and Thailand. The Americans are forced to return to Taiwan, which they had occupied in 1946, as well as Okinawa to Japan in 1972, after protests against the US occupation of these regions grow too much to ignore. After the fall of Saigon in 1975 and the unification of Vietnam under the North on July 2, 1976, the Viet Nam quoc [Empire of Vietnam] is restored as the government of the country, and the Ngyuen dynasty returns to its proper position as the imperial family of Vietnam. Prince Guy Georges Vinh San, living in exile in France, reluctantly returns to Vietnam and is coronated in Hanoi as Emperor Bao Ngoc of Vietnam. The Chinese and Americans would still help Lol Nol overthrow the legitimate Cambodian royal government and create the Khmer Republic in 1970 in preparation for Pol Pot and his fascist Khmer Rouge cult to seize power in 1976, with the expected results of genocide, mass murder and ethnic cleansing. The Empire of Vietnam would be forced to invade Cambodia on 21 December 1978, after constant assaults and genocides against the Vietnamese minority and the brutality of the Khmer Rouge regime finally force the hand of the Vietnamese government. Despite the ROC, USA, British Commonwealth, and even the National Bolshevik faction of the Soviet government backing the Khmer Rouge terrorists for fear of Vietnamese dominance of Indochina, the Vietnamese Army manages to defeat the Cambodian fascist militias with ease and liberates Cambodia from the Nazi-like regime of the Khmer Rouge, also taking the opportunity to topple the Moscow aligned communist government in Laos during the liberation of Cambodia. The Kingdoms of Laos and Cambodia return to the world stage as satellite states of the Empire of Vietnam, and the crimes of the Khmer Rouge are exposed for all to see. China under the leadership of Chiang Ching-kuo, Chiang Kai Shek's biological son, would still attempt to invade Vietnam on Jan 17, 1979 and would be subsequently trounced by the determined and well-prepared Vietnamese forces. The ROCAF [Republic of China Armed Forces] are forced to withdraw from Vietnam and the ROC is humiliated on the world stage. Protests and riots against the brutal communist regime of the KMT and the ROC see the fall of the Chiangs and the KMT and the rise of former IJA solider Lee-Teng-Hui, who breaks ties with the Soviet Union and secretly works with Japan and Vietnam to help East Turkestan, the Empire of Manchukou in Manchuria, the Mengjiang United AutonmousAutonomous Government in Inner Mongolia and the Llamadom of Tibet regain their independence. Lee-Teng-Hui's reforms and pro-West, pro-Japanese orientation cause trouble with the KMT hardliners, and when the Berlin Wall falls in 1989, the Republic of China [ROC] collapses along with the rest of the Warsaw Pact. By 1991, Manchukou, Mengjiang, the Republic of East Turkestan and the Tibetan Llamadom have regained their independence and China's core provinces have been reorganized into a federation of states ruled by the House of Zhu, the ruling family of the Ming dynasty, as its imperial family.
