Kohta's little sister Kanae is also alive after being revived by the Institute and escaping from Director Kakuzawa and his goons, and is also a part of Kohta's harem. After the final battle between the SAT death squad and Kaede as Lucy, the Institute was dissolved by the Japanese government and its HQ destroyed in a mysterious storm, which allowed Kanae to escape from her imprisonment at the Institute HQ and make her way to the Maple Inn where she was able to reunite with Kohta. As Kohta thinks, the girls of the harem are taking care of their babies in the other rooms of the mansion. Meanwhile, unseen and unnoticed, Shinji Kanzaki, the former pilot of the EVA-Unit 01 under the name "Shinji Ikari", sighs in confusion at Kohta and his happy family as he watches them from the safety of a nearby tree. But confusion clouded his mind, particularly when it came to Kaede, whose striking resemblance to Rei Ayanami baffled him. Rei, his fellow EVA pilot and biological older sister, had never smiled like Kaede, and her eyes had always held a depth of guarded emotion that was incomprehensibly enigmatic.
